One Bowl Allergy Free Baking Cookbook Review plus Giveaway

As you all know, I have coeliac disease and therefore cannot eat anything with gluten or wheat in it. There are many many others in the same boat as well as some that have other food allergies or intolerance’s which means they have to avoid dairy, nuts, soy and egg. Unfortunately many of them are children and it is a challenge for the parents to know what to cook.

Cooking allergy free can be a challenge, especially when you are first diagnosed as your head is spinning and you think you cannot eat anything decent again. You wonder if I will ever get to eat cakes or muffins again. Plus when you are a busy mum having to deal with it yourself or for your children you need all the help you can get.

So when the lovely people at Wakefield Press contacted me and asked me to check out a new one bowl allergy free cookbook, I couldn’t wait to do so. This cookbook appealed to me on so many levels. Firstly because it was allergy free. Secondly because it was one bowl baking. You cannot get much simpler than that. Thirdly because it promised me that most recipes could be made with 15 minutes prep time, vital as I am busy mum, I don’t have time to spend baking.

When I received One Bowl Allergy Free Baking by Linda Bosnic, I wasn’t disappointed. A quick flick through the book showed me there was plenty of recipes, lots of variety and all looked very easy to make.

This is an allergy free cookbook so not specifically gluten free, there are a few recipes in here that have oats and while the author recommends gluten free oats to make them gluten free, well we know it isn’t that simple, as the oats in Australia are not guaranteed to be gluten free. If you require gluten free food, then you certainly can take the risk, that’s your choice but myself as a super sensitive coeliac, I won’t be.

Another down side is the lack of pictures. We have been spoilt these days by most cookbooks have lovely photos to gaze at. There are no photos of yummy treats in this cookbook as I suspect it keeps the cost down. As a confident baker, the lack of photos doesn’t bother me, but for new cooks it may deter them.

What I do love is the information at the beginning. Lots of lovely tips about being allergy free and keeping cross contamination at bay. Also how to store the food and how to deal with birthday parties if catering for an allergy free child.

There are some handy recipes at the back like how to make dairy free condensed milk and chocolate sauce.

I couldn’t wait to delve in and give a few recipes a go. I had some playdates coming up that would be perfect to give the recipes in the book a trial run.

I made coconut cake, chocolate brownie, banana and choc muffins and chocolate chip cookies.

<<<  Banana Choc Chip Muffins

Coconut Cake >>>

Linda mentions at the start of the book that if you are cooking gluten free then it is usually best to do so on the day of consuming and if you are having to store the items it is best to store them in airtight containers. I am glad she mentioned this as this is something I found. I store baked goods in Tupperware as I found they last longer or freeze them if you can. I cook a batch of muffins for the week, put some in the Tupperware and some in the freezer and this what works for me.

I had lots of fun cooking the recipes. Each one of them were simple, easy and took one bowl to make. Everything was delicious and my guests also enjoyed them. Coconut cake was a stand out and the chocolate brownie was delicious. So very yummy and I have in fact made this one again. I have ear marked cherry ripe slice, chocolate bubble bars and sultana loaf to make soon.
