Today my family and I were lucky enough to have the opportunity to check out the first Melbourne show of the Disney Live Mickey and Friends music festival.
My 2 year loves the mouse guy and it was a thrill to be able to take him to see his favourite character in another medium. Sure we have Disney Junior and the DVD’s, books, t-shirts and his own little Mickey to cuddle but it’s great for him and other Mickey fans to see him and his friends another way.
The show on a whole was great. I appreciated the voice over at the start warning us all what the special affects were ie smoke and some darkness. My boys were both glued to the action for the first 40 mins and then they had an intermission. Not sure this was ideal as the second act didn’t have my 2 year old enthralled at all. The intermission lost the momentum. I noticed other families around me also taking their toddlers out as they were fidgety during the second half. My almost 7 year old though was able to enjoy it all.
This the view from our seats. Unfortunately there were some parts of the show that I couldn’t see due to the location of the characters being right on the side of the stage and as we were seated on the far left we couldn’t see them. I would definitely make sure that you are purchasing tickets make sure they are in the middle range of seats.
As with all these events, there is lots of over priced merchandise available, programs were $16, bucket of popcorn $15 and fairy floss $13 as well as many other items. I had warned my big boy that we weren’t buying any of it beforehand so he knew not to expect anything. We took plenty of our own snacks and treats so that was fine.
Mickey and his friends was a great show to take the kids, you could hear the characters properly, lots of dancing and music, it was an entertaining show. I thank Disney and Cavanagh PR for the chance to attend. Check Disney Live website for more information.

We enjoyed it too and thank you for the tickets! My 8 year old loved the Little Mermaid part (Ariel is her favourite Disney Princess) while the 6 year old was most taken with Toy Story – Woody is her clear favourite Disney character of all time. 2 year old loved it all but especially “the girl Mouse”
I agree that the merch was ridiculously overpriced and we also bought nothing. My two quibbles with the show overall was the price of the food & merch, and the inclusion of “Single Ladies”. Call me straightlaced, but it just doesn’t seem appropriate in a kids’s stageshow and did not fit with the rest of the music and themes. Why not just perform actual Disney songs, as they did for most of the show? Do little kids really need “If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it”? (My 6 year old asked my, “What’s IT?” I said, “I think she means herself.” 6 yo: “But she is a WOMAN, not a THING.”)
Thanks so much for your feedback Kathy, I am glad that you enjoyed yourselves. I didn’t mind the music of the Single Ladies being used but I did think the whole singing, dancing and pointing to the ring finger a bit silly in the dancing, I was thinking that young’ens just wouldn’t get it. I agree that there are many more suitable songs available. Your six year old daughter is very smart and insightful. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.
My kids also love Disney characters especially Mickey and Minnie and I hope I could bring them next time so they’ll be able to see their favorite characters as well as the others. Yeah, your seats we’re a bit far from the stage but I am sure that you guys still enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing the experience.
