Bupa recently invited myself and my family to try their Family Challenge. Basically it involves deciding to change a less healthy habit for a new healthier one and commit to it for 7 days. Doing it for those 7 days may help break the badder habit cycle and encourage you to do it more.
I am always up for a challenge and have the family unit do more healthy things is one of my goals for my family. I’ll share with you what we did.
Firstly, I knew we could eat healthier, and I think it’s easier to eat healthy in summer with all the yummy fruit and vegies around, we just had to make the commitment.
The only thing stopping me? The fridge I currently have tends to ‘freeze’ the fruit and vegetables I have in the crisper. I ditched the crisper ages ago and have some Tupperware Fridge Smarts, which work great. But I wanted something cheaper so I got some more fridge containers, this time from Decor and Sistema and filled them all with yummy fruits and vegetables. I also made sure I had the ingredients for myself to have a salad for lunch everyday.
Also a great way to eat vegies is with dips. There are some great dips out there – or make your own, my kids love them and give them their own portion as double dipping will occur.
This challenge went great, my oldest does not like fruits or vegetables at all, getting him to eat them is another challenge (and blog post) for another day but the rest of us enjoyed the ’fruits’ of my labour. (pun totally intended)
Tips for you: Have the stuff in the fridge in the first place. Put them on your grocery list and buy them at the shops. Come home and wash it all and pop them into the containers.
We weren’t content with just having healthier food in the fridge, I wanted to incorporate some activity as well. Since school was starting, I thought it ideal to do the walk to and from school. Certainly healthier for all of us. It is in walkable distance 20 – 25 minutes each way and that means getting at least 30 mins of activity a day – which is a goal I like to achieve.
One thing stopping me? Clothes. I didn’t have appropriate clothes for being out in public while exercising (I am not a big clothes shopper – for me at least) so I trotted off to Target and was able to pick some some ok looking pants and tops to walk comfortably in.
So off we went, we have had a couple of obstacles, one being the weather and 2nd being conflicting schedules, have to be somewhere rather quickly after drop off. These are obstacles that are always going to be there so I have come up with a Plan B for those days.
We have a Wii console and we love the Just Dance disc. We got Just Dance 2 from Santa for Christmas so if we cannot get a walk in for the day, we do 30 minutes of dancing instead! It’s lots of fun and something we can all participate in.
