Weekly Menu Plan with Gluten Free Meal Ideas
Wowsers, we had a very big weekend, with my son turning 7. While I still get used to the fact that I am now the mother of a 7 year old, I’ll share this weeks meal ideas.
Weekly Menu Plan
Monday – Bangers and Mash (need simple comfort food badly) with lots of steamed veg.
Tuesday – Tuna Risotto with home made wedges
Wednesday – Lentil Shepherd Pie – so hearty and filling, easily gluten free
Thursday – Gluten Free Fettuccine Carbonara
Friday – Gluten Free Baked Chicken with Tomato Sauce - scroll down for the recipe
Saturday – Mediterranean Tuna and Rice Pie – the rice is the base so easily gluten free – just use gluten free stock
Sunday – Simple Supper Night
Linking up with Org Junkie and Menu Plan Monday.
Have a great week everyone!

Oh Mama Mia
I was checking out my blog reader today and come across an article by Mia Freedman. I am sure you have heard of her? Her blog is amongst the most well known in Australia, Mamamia. She wrote “Does anyone eat anything anymore?” about how annoying it is that people bang on about how they can’t eat sugar or gluten or dairy or additives… how trendy it has become.
As I write this, that particular post has over 350 comments with the majority of people disagreeing with her.
I have been a diagnosed coeliac for 9 years. Yes it is something I am born with and no I cannot have just a little bit. I hate hate HATE having coeliac disease. Yes I truly hate having it because I am not a show pony, I hate being the centre of attention and I hate having to explain details of my personal life to strangers just to get them to understand. Yes of course I feel better but doesn’t make it easier.
People pretending they are allergic is just plain wrong. Personally I have never seen/heard anyone doing so but I don’t doubt it happens.
I also admit that I like that there are articles like this one around, it does bring to the forefront of people’s mind about the reality of food allergies and intolerance’s. It gets people talking, I have had several emails from people saying to me, ‘Did you see Mia’s article?’ The more it is talked about the more education that will come from it and that is my ultimate goal.
If that means that gluten free is trendy that I am sorry I am all for it. I love that there are so many products out there, I love that cafes and restaurants are trying to cater for us (more education needed here though) I love that people are putting on invitations ‘please advise of any special food needs’.
Why? Because in the 9 years I have been diagnosed as having coeliac disease, I still feel like an outsider, I still feel like I am being a pain in the rear end in restaurants and I apologise all the time for something I cannot control. If it is trendy then I might just be trendy for 5 minutes and it might make me feel a bit better about myself and surely this can only be a good thing?
So yes Mia, good article. Thank you.

Great Basco Gluten Free Products on special at Woolworths this week
I spotted a great special in the Woolworths catalogue this week (starting today).
50% off Basco gluten free products!
Isn’t that great? One of my favourite Basco products is the Golden Butter Cake Mix, I use it all the time to make birthday cakes and cup cakes.
The specials last for a week and in the Woolworths I have access to, the Basco gluten free products are located in the health food aisle.
Happy Shopping!
PS I was not paid by Woolworths or Basco for this post, I saw the specials in my local catalogue and thought others would love to know also.

Orgran Gluten Free Magazine

One thing Australia is lacking is a good gluten free/allergy free regular magazine.
If you are a coeliac I am certain you know about the Orgran range of products. They also had a magazine that they put out. I say as I am not sure if they still do but I do know they have past issues that you can download them all here from the Orgran website.
They are quite good! Some recipes and product news. They are definitely work a look.
And no, I am not being paid for this

Gluten Free and Vegetarian Thanksgiving Menu
I know some of my Australian readers will be scratching their heads wondering why on earth I am posting about Thanksgiving since I am in Australia.
I have taken more notice of American holidays recently as we now have an American relative join the family. I also have noticed that I am getting alot of traffic from America with search terms of ‘gluten free thanksgiving’. Since coeliac disease is universal, then there is no reason why I cannot point people in the right direction. Plus I have always wanted to make a gluten free pumpkin pie.
So I chatted to my relative, googled some recipes myself and cooked numerous dishes. Like for us at Christmas time, families have their own traditions, but here is what I would make if I was in the States.
Gluten Free Vegetarian Thanksgiving Menu
- “Three Sisters” stew (1)- to make this gluten free, use a gluten free stock or just plain water. It is very yummy, you could serve it with rice or mashed potatoes.
- Slow cooker sweet potato casserole (5) – oh my goodness. This is soooo sweet. I used gluten free mini marshmallows.
- Green beans (3) – I just steamed these and then let served it with feta cheese which semi melts, really yummy and a bit hit with hubby and the boys.
- Zucchini, carrot and mushroom loaf (2)- super easy to make, I used gluten free breadcrumbs. So yummy and full of goodness, even my 6 year ate this with relish.
- Sour cream mashed potatoes (4) – I boiled some peeled potatoes until cooked, drained them, mashed with milk and butter until smooth and then stir in a couple of spoonfuls sour cream. mmmm….
- Potato and tomato bake
- Crustless pumpkin pie (6) – big hit with hubby. Me? Not so much. Seems I prefer my pumpkin in a brownie.
I have enjoyed checking out alot of posts in the lead up to Thanksgiving, so I thought I would share some of them.
- Mama Me Gluten Free – Thanksgiving Day
- Gluten Free Goddess has some fabulous Gluten Free Tips for Thanksgiving 2011
- Mom What’s for Dinner – be sure to check out her Gluten Free Thanksgiving Menu and Recipes
- a great free printable pack from Life Your Way to help you along your way, whether you are gluten free or not
- and I have to make this at some stage, mmm, Pumpkin Spice Latte made in the slow cooker from Crockpot 365.
So whatever is happening in your neck of the woods this Thursday, I hope it is a good one.
